My issue took a total of 5 hours of tech support help and ultimately the issue was either a Midi driver that I could never locate, and a different port on the sound card that I had never used before.

A further hour with HP and their only solution was to do a complete factory reset – a bit drastic. I have since been in touch with my local PC guru who solved my problem in less than 30 mins!! He found the BIOS was also out of date and having updated that the audio was back – hoorah!!
